Wednesday evening saw Ian Swan take part in the first of the Rossendale Harriers Summer Midweek Series, the Lee Mill Fell Race. After setting off from Stubbylee Hall, Ian completed the 10.7k distance with 1,257ft of elevation in 1:03:25.
Kath Biddle headed to North Wales on Saturday for the Ogwen yr Helgi Du 25k mountain race across the Carneddau, the Front Range of the Snowdonia mountains, navigating this very technical and treacherous course along the Eyri Slate Trail in 4:11:10.
On the same day, Ken Smith raced the Gisburn Trail Half Marathon in 2:50:37. This tough trail is normally enjoyed by hikers and bikers, with the race giving trail runners an opportunity to “seek enchanting forests, bewitching trails and captivatingly immense woodland horizons as far as the eye can see”.
On Sunday, two members attended one of Yorkshire’s most popular 10k races, the York 10k. This flat and fast course starts and finishes in Knavesmire Road, close to York Racecourse, and Chemane Thomas sped through the heart of the city in an impressive time of 0:51:28 , followed by Helen Kay in 1:10:34.
Ten members also battled the rain, winds and 1,312 ft of brutal climbs in the Chip Chase Fell Race in Uppermill, Saddleworth, named due to the chip butties given out to runners at the end. Ian Swan was the first for the club to tackle this challenging 10k route in 56:39, with one section overhead to be described as ‘more rock climbing than running’. Other results were Donna Cartwright (1:01:31), Mark Garner (1:03:08), Neil Greenhalgh (1:04:22), Mark Taylor (1:04:41), Lucie Tighe (1:09:39), Alison Howarth (1:18:47), Karen Doherty (1:19:26), Dominic Parry (1:23:34) and Stephen Crowe (1:27:37).
