This Saturday, Kath Biddle completed the Manchester Trail Escape Marathon, tackling the challenging route with 3,800 feet of elevation in 5:58:01. This inaugural race comprised of mixed terrain and set off from Philips Park before heading into the western side of the Peak District National Park.
Following her impressive result in the previous day’s marathon, Kath headed over to the Freckleton Half Marathon on Sunday, where she was the third in her age category (VF50), finishing in 1:57:32. This is the oldest half marathon in the country and was part of this year’s championship for the club. Kath was joined by team members Simon Foulkes (01:46:23), John Szubert (2:33:21), Adrian Ashburn (1:49:09), Ethan Malone (2:22:31), Helen Kay (2:25:13), Charlotte Holden (2:26:56), Cath Jones (2:40:16), Gail Harrison (2:40:16) and Andy Wheeler (2:59:18).
Sunday also saw eight members at Race the Train, another from the club championship, which set off from Bury Train Station to the sound of the train’s whistle. Travelling along paths running alongside the railway lines and the Irwell River for approximately 11 miles, runners attempted to beat the train to Rawtenstall Station. Steven Fawcett did so in a spectacular time 1:17:14, followed by Chris Mihalyi (1:20:39), Mark Taylor (1:28:49), Emma Horner (1:31:53), Amanda Callan (1:42:10), Lucie Tighe (1:41:21), Laura Aiken (1:43:21) and David Schofield (2:03:44).
In what was a very busy day of racing for the club, five took on the latest in the Run the Moors series, Settle Hills Fell Race. Held in the Yorkshire Dales, this challenging climb with 1640ft of elevation boasted magnificent views of the limestone outcrops and caves of Attermire Scar. Club Chairperson Donna Cartwright picked up another age category win (1st VF45), completing the 7 mile distance in a speedy 1:17:58. Also taking part were Neil Greenhalgh (1:22:33), Chemane Thomas (1:37:08), Stephen Crowe (1:46:07) and Emma Wolstencroft (1:55:21).
