Fifth Place for Khama Banda at Bolton Community 10k

13 April 2025 (by D.Cartwright)

The latest week of racing for Radcliffe AC started off with a very sunny Saturday on the fells of Wardle Skyline. The challenging 11.3km route with 1250ft of elevation was particularly tough this year due to the unseasonably warm weather. Five members enjoyed the views across the hills in this second race of the Run the Moors series, with Mark Garner the first in for the club (1:06:54), followed by Donna Cartwright (1:08:14), Lucie Tighe (1:20:29), Karen Doherty (1:24:15) and Peter Warr (1:33:57).

Elsewhere on Saturday, Paula Abernathy celebrated a milestone birthday (and a new age category!) at the Hawkshead 16k Trail Race. This race benefited from views of Windermere and the surrounding peaks of the Coniston Hills, the Langdales and most of the Lakeland fells. There was also a challenging ‘mile long, near vertical, killer climb of the 'Coffin Trail'’, which was no match for Paula, who crossed the finish line in 1:48:46.

Also hitting the trails this weekend, Kath Biddle’s latest half marathon took place on Sunday at the Cannock Chase Running Festival.  This scenic race saw Kath race through the undulating trails of Cannock Chase Forest in Staffordshire, finishing in 2:00:02.

Sunday also saw a fantastic turnout of 22 members at the Sunday Bolton Community 10k in Horwich, the eighth race of the club championship. Starting and finishing at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, several members set personal bests on this out and back along Chorley New Road. Khama Bhanda took fifth place overall in an impressive time of 37:03. Other times included Steven Fawcett (42:00), Neil Swithenbank (42:34), followed by a trio of Marks - Mark Williams (43:08), Mark Taylor (43:53) and Mark Garner (44:01), Dominic Parry (46:20), Alex Field (47:02), Lisa Antrobus (50:03), Lucie Tighe (54:12), Sarah Wilson (54:58), John Szubert (56:47), Katherine Swithenbank (58:34) David Schofield (1:00:03), Helen Kay (1:05:11), Caroline Malone  (1:08:12), Tracey Wroe (1:11:05) , Jen Foley (1:12:31), Bev Quinton (1:15:22), Michael Scott (1:15:31), Sarah Parry (1:16:44) and Andy Wheeler (1:18:11).

Representing Radcliffe AC with their usual cheer and team spirit, five of the club’s juniors, Indie, Luke, George, Skyler and Benjamin  took on the Bolton Wanderers Community Family 2k.
