Trails and Travel for Radcliffe AC6 April 2025 (by D.Cartwright) |
Kicking off a fantastic week of racing on Wednesday evening, a brilliant turnout of 25 Radcliffe AC members took on Curley's 5k trail race, the seventh of the Club Championships.
Enjoying this scenic route through Horwich, Marc Taylor was first in for the club in a speedy time of 22:13, followed by Chris Mihalyi (23:42), Mark Williams (23:49), Paul Stevens (24:10), Donna Cartwright (24:16), Mark Garner (24:25), Ethan Malone (26:29) Paula Abernathy (27:11), Jack Connor (27:13), Lisa Antrobus (28:22), Chemane Thomas (28:50), Charlene Leyden (28:56), Louise Shield (30:01), Laura Aiken (30:06), Lucie Tighe (30:06), Emma Wolstencroft (31:11), David Schofield (31:19), Peter Warr (31:23), Charlotte Holden (31:28), Grace Williams (34:23), Stephen Crowe (34:34), Sheila McNulty (38:56), Tracy Wroe (39:11), Michael Scott (41:40) and Andy Wheeler (42:55). Although a shorter distance benefitting from beautiful sunshine throughout, this was a challenging, hilly route with several tumbles along the way. The promise of the pub at the finish line was heard to be good motivation for many members!
On Saturday the club's resident mountain goat hit the Pennine Way to take on the Five Trigs, a 20 mile fell race with 3,000 feet of ascent across difficult and varied terrain. Whilst never happier than when he's barreling up a hill, this was an especially technical route with an impressive finishing time of 3:41:41 for Ian Swan.
Sunday saw several members representing the club abroad, with three at the Generali Berlin Half Marathon. Speeding round what has been described as a 'sightseeing tour on foot' , Mark Taylor was the first in for club in a blazing time of 1:40:25, followed closely by Emma Horner (1:45:48) and Simon Foulkes (1:45:49), who both crossed the finish line together.
Renowned jet-setter Amy Brough-Aikin's current stint in Rhodes saw her completing the Tui Rhodes Half Marathon in 2:00:17.
Slightly closer to home, Eileen Sharman raced through Burnley in the picturesque Brun Valley 10k trail race, finishing in 1:11:01.
Kath Biddle also took on the Bramham Park Trail Half Marathon with a mixture of wooded trails, open fields, rolling hills and lovely views, finishing in 2:10:25.
For something a little different, John Szubert took part in Race to the Castle 10k, battling a particularly challenging hill up to Lancaster Castle and looping around the battlements before crossing the finish line in 59:59.
