Tremendous turnouts for Radcliffe AC on the fells

1 July 2024 (by D.Cartwright)

After a 5-year absence, Radcliffe juniors and seniors were out in force for the latest reincarnation of the Tor Mile Fell Race, one of Britain’s oldest fell races. The first kilometre takes runners to the summit of Tor Hill, followed by a nerve-wracking scramble of a second kilometre back down to Helmshore.

Ian Swan was first back into Helmshore for Radcliffe, coming 16th overall, in a time of 16:02. Ian was joined by Chris Mihalyi (17:23), Andrew O’Donnell (17:47), Karen Doherty (22:38), Charlene Leyden (23:55), Oliver Swan (24:24), Niamh Warr (24:53) Peter Warr (24:43), Lucie Tighe (25:16), Louise Shield (26:10), Lia Angerman (33:23) and Isaac Blacklock (42:05).

In the shorter junior race, Grace led the team home in a time of 14:59, followed by Benjamin (15:32), Sienna (17:10), Sophie (17:17), Poppy (17:20), George (18:36), and Clevon in 18:47.

The second fell race in a busy race week was Eddie’s Revenge Fell Race, the sixth meeting of this season’s Run The Moors league. Head Coach Ian Swan was once again first over the line for Radcliffe in a cracking time of 33:20. Mark Taylor was the second Radcliffe finisher in 36:13, despite a nasty fall in his baptism of fire first fell race. There was yet another age category win for Radcliffe’s seasoned fell racer Kathryn Davies who was second FV60 in 43:42.

Also racing Eddie’s for Radcliffe were Christopher Mihalyi (36:18), Andrew O’Donnell (37:00), Neil Greenhalgh (39:02), Paul Stevens (41:50), Karen Doherty (45:18), Ethan Malone (45:59), Charlene had-a-nice-trip Leyden (49:39), Alison Howarth (49:55), Stephen Crowe (50:00), Brennan has-anyone-seen-my-glasses Tighe (50:51), Lucie Tighe (51:02), Louise Shield         (1:04:05), Caroline never-running-a-fell-race-again Malone (1:04:05), Emma Wolstencroft (1:04:06) and Laura Aiken (1:04:06).

It was all Iron Man in Bolton this weekend, with a Iron Kids, a 5k and 10k night run, and the triathlon on Sunday. Nigel Brady completed the Iron Man 70.3 triathlon which includes 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and a 13.1 mile run. Nigel finished in a time of 6:50:14.

The 10km night run was raced by Dominic Parry (45:28) and Lucie Tighe (59:29), and in the 5km version there was a new personal best for Laura Aiken, who completed the distance in 26:45. Also running the 5k night run were Craig Ward (26:50), Grace Williams (28:05), Natalie Hitchen (36:37), and Bev Quinton (38:37).
