It’s a Piece of Cake for Radcliffe Athletes

6 May 2024 (by D.Cartwright)

Radcliffe Ladies were out in force over the weekend in two mid distance races taking in some of the most attractive trails in the local areas.

In the Ladies 5-mile Trail Race at Worsley Woods, Charlene Leyden was the first of five Radcliffe ladies over the line in 42 minutes, 11 seconds. Charlene was closely followed by Karen Wells in 43:45, in this 32nd edition of the ladies only trail race put on by Swinton Running Club, taking in the largest conservation area of Salford. Also running at Worsley were Lucie Tighe (48:05), Tracy Wroe (54:39), and Grace Williams (56:46).

Radcliffe ladies also had three athletes at It’s a Piece of Cake 10km race at the urban woodland of Boggart Hole Clough. Sheila Jones once again excelled in her age group (F60), coming in at a fantastic 2nd place in 52 minutes, 33 seconds. Sheila was followed by Emma Wolstencroft in 59:13, and Laura Aiken in 63:20.

The male athletes also had cause to celebrate on the weekend, and across the Irish Sea, Radcliffe athlete Christian Peters had his cake and ate it at the Belfast City Marathon. Coming in the top 5% of all finishers in a rapid 2 hours, 56 minutes, and 46 seconds, this was another new personal best for Christian as he goes from strength to strength in the 26.2-mile distance.

Elsewhere, Adam Wills ran the 4-mile Astley Park Trail Race in 27 mins 28 seconds, whilst Rob Lister marked his 300th Parkrun at Crichton with a time of 21:15.

Junior athlete Benji also had a significant Parkrun milestone last weekend, bagging his 10th Parkrun, with a personal best to boot, whizzing around the tarmac and grassy paths of Peel Park in 35:14.
