Long distance successes for RAC athletes25 March 2024 (by D.Cartwright) |
Radcliffe Athletic Club members contended with “four seasons in a day” when they took on a local 20-mile challenge.
The club had several representatives at The Village Link Challenge, a loop of six historic Bury villages: Nangreaves, Holcombe, Hawkshaw, Affetside, Ainsworth and Greenmount.
They contended with very muddy trails along with hail, rain, wind and sun.
The event was organised by Bury’s Sunnywood Project and started and finished in Burrs Country Park. Participants could walk or run, and the RAC members taking part were Laura Aiken, Lisa Antrobus, Katy Chaplin, Stephen Crowe, Mia Derbyshire, Neil Greenhalgh, Emma Horner, Charlene Leyden, Neil Naisbitt, Louise Shield, Paul Stevens, Mark Taylor and Emma Wolstencroft.
Amy Brough-Aiken also took on a challenge with a difference when she travelled to Nottingham for the Pierrepont Plod.
Runners had six hours to complete as many 5.44km loops as possible in Holme Pierrepont Country Park. Emma completed a fantastic 8 loops totalling 44.3k, the distance of a marathon.
On the roads, Mark Garner set a great personal best of 1:35:43 at Wilmslow Half Marathon, part of Sunday’s Wilmslow Running Festival. Lucie Tighe ran 58:26 in the festival’s 10k race and son Benji clocked a great 15:14 in the 2.5k.
Meanwhile, Andy Wheeler ran 36:26 at Bernie’s 5k on the paths around Moor Park in Preston.
The cancellation of Heaton parkrun saw a large RAC contingent travel to Peel parkrun in Salford. Rob Shiels was the club’s first finisher in 19:29 followed by junior Robbie Parkinson who set a new pb of 21:27. Also running were Dominic Parry (25:46), Tracy Wroe (32:05), Brennan Tighe (37:08), Sara Parry (38:11), junior Benji Tighe (38:13), Lucie Tighe (38:13) and Bev Quinton (39:55).
Results from other parkruns: Congleton – Kath Biddle (27:25); Bolton - Alex Field (22:29) and Elaine Bailey (36:17); Hereford - Ethan Malone (24:35) and Charlotte Holden (26:18); Clarence - Ian Swan (22:54), Sheila Jones (31:13) and junior Oliver Swan (37:25); Worden - Helen Kay (31:54).
