Running in a winter wonderland

3 December 2023 (by D.Cartwright)

Ian Swan was running in a winter wonderland when he completed a classic West Yorkshire fell race.

The Radcliffe Athletic Club athlete revelled in the snowy conditions at the six-mile Mytholmroyd Fell Race which packed in 1,640ft of climbing.

The route kicked off with a tough climb and took in Midgley Moor, the Luddenden Valley and part of the Calderdale Way.

Ian described the course as “hard work” but “amazing” after finishing 59th out of 119 runners in 1:06:00. He was rewarded with a free beer and homemade soup at the end.

It was a quiet week for the club with the planned cross country fixture at Rossendale cancelled due to the icy conditions.

Some parkruns also fell victim to the weather but RAC members still managed to get their Saturday morning 5k fix.

The largest contingent was at Heaton Park where Mark Taylor clocked 23:04 followed by Sheila Jones who was first VW65 in 24:27. Also running were Charlene Leyden (25:54), Lucie Tighe (28:59) and Dominic Parry (31:20).

In Belfast, Bev Quinton completed Queen’s parkrun in 41:23. Closer to home Mike Kontowtt ran 22:13 at Peel while times from other locations were: Clarence – Stephen Crowe (30:29); Warrington - Katherine Biddle (26:51); Hyndburn - Helen Kay (34:46).
