Trio of age group wins at soggy Pennington Flash27 August 2023 (by D.Cartwright) |
RADCLIFFE Athletic Club members notched up soggy feet and a hat-trick of age group wins at their latest championship race.
A strong contingent of 16 members took part in the Pennington Flash Trail Race, part of the Central Lancashire Grand Prix which is contested by local clubs.
They were also competing for points in the club’s road and trail championship, posting strong performances throughout the field.
Hot on the heels of her age group win at Birchwood 10k a week earlier, Sheila Jones was first VW65 in 42:27.
Kath Davies was first VW60, clocking 46:55 on the five-mile course which was heavily flooded in parts and akin to running through a stream! Sheila McNulty completed the winning trio, finishing in 58:48 to claim first WV75.
First over the line for the club was Craig Norman who was a fine 15th in 34:24. Other results were Mark Williams (third MV55 36:23), Ian Swan (37:30), Chemane Golding (43:04), Paula Abernethy (second WV55 43:20), Karen Doherty (44:55); Peter Warr (46:52), Helen Kay (49:13), Elaine Bailey (second WV60 50:41), Tracy Wroe (third VW60 51:50), Lucy Tetler (second VW45 51:55), Natalie Hitchen (57:24) and Bev Quinton (1:05:50).
The women’s team was third and the men’s team was fourth.
Some of those who raced at Pennington Flash were also in action at the midweek Golf Ball Fell Race, enjoying “typical” summer weather of rain and mist on the Rossendale Hills. Championship points were again up for grabs as the race is part of both the club’s fell championship and the inter-club Run the Moors Fell Grand Prix.
With boggy conditions in parts, John Gibbs completed the 5.5-miles with 801ft of climbing in 50:26. Craig Norman was close behind in 50:52 and other results were Ian Swan (54:44), Warren Simmens (1:04:02), Kath Davies (1:10:18), Karen Doherty (1:11:36), Peter Warr (1:11:47) and Stephen Crowe (1:20:14).
Mia Derbyshire and Emma Wolstencroft completed the Monument Marathon, a challenging endurance event organised by Bury’s Sunnywood Project. Open to runners and hikers, the 26-mile loop on mostly trail paths connects six of Bury's historic towers: Bradshaw Hall, Tentering Tower, Radcliffe Tower, Turton Tower, Grant's Tower and Peel Tower.
Shorter distances were the order of the day for members who took part in Saturday morning 5k parkruns at a variety of locations.
Close to home, impressive junior Robbie Parkinson was the club’s first finisher at Heaton Park in a speedy 22:38 and Amanda Callan clocked 30:35. Mark Williams ran 25:15 at Bolton followed by Peter Warr in 30:30 while Kath Davies was the volunteer tail walker.
Rob Shiels was fifth at Pennington Flash in 20:46 and results from elsewhere were: Burnley – Martin Archer (24:20); Hyde – Lucy Tetler (34:34); Isabel Trail – Elaine Bailey (first WV60 28:25), Helen Kay (28:46) and Bev Quinton (38:34); Markshall Estate – Steven Fawcett (24:11); Stretford - Mark Garner (21:03) and Sheila Jones (first VW65 23:34); Worsley Woods – Tracy Wroe (31:35).
