RAC runners show Viking spirit in York

6 August 2023 (by D.Cartwright)

Historic York was the backdrop for four Radcliffe AC runners who completed one of the country’s most beautiful city races.

They enjoyed Sunday’s popular York 10k which starts close to the racecourse before passing landmarks including the ancient city walls, Clifford’s Tower and the minster.

It was a successful day for Emma Wolstencroft who flew round the course in a new personal best of 57:18. Helen Kay ran 1:01:49 and Deborah Warrington and Bev Quinton finished together in 1:17:52 and 1:17:53 respectively.

Two Radcliffe runners took part in the inaugural Chip Chase Fell Race on Sunday, a lovely and varied course on the Saddleworth hills above Uppermill. Mark Garner finished the 6.2-mile route with 1,312ft of climbing in 1:05:36 while Karen Doherty was third V50 in 01:13:18.

The race was part of both Radcliffe’s fell championship and the Run the Moors Fell Grand Prix which is contested by local clubs. Participants were rewarded with a chip butty at the end!

Doherty was also one of three Radcliffe runners at Whittle Pike Fell Race at Waterfoot, the second fixture of the Rossendale Harriers Mid-Week Fell Series.

Ian Swan was first home for the club and 26th overall, covering the 5.1 miles and 1,601ft of climbing in 1:01:28. Doherty ran 1:23:09 and Stephen Crowe finished in 1:37:22 with a foot injury.

Two members were also in midweek action at the Hopwood Trot 5.5-mile multi-terrain race. Mia Derbyshire was third SENW in 39:41 and Andy Wheeler ran 1:11:44.

Rob Shiels flew the flag for Radcliffe at Volksgarten parkrun in Düsseldorf, Germany where he was 15th in 22:20. Meanwhile, Elaine Bailey showed her mettle when she was first VW60 at the UK’s second hardest parkrun. Running across the sand and climbing the “dune of doom”, she finished Woolacombe Dunes in 37:39.

Closer to home Sheila Jones was first VW65 in 24:26 at Heaton parkrun, Mia Derbyshire was the fifth woman in 22:09 and Mark Taylor ran 23:12.

Pail Abernethy clocked 26:03 to finish first VW55 and seventh woman at Monsal Trail. At Bolton, Mark Williams ran 28:06 followed by Ethan Malone (30:08), Charlotte Holden (30:35) and David Schofield (33:16).

Results from elsewhere: Morecambe Prom – Mike Scott (36:43); Penrhyn – Katherine Biddle (27:21); Worsley Woods – Tracy Wroe (30:23); Wythenshawe – Helen Kay (30:49) and Bev Quinton (41:06).
