RAC duo conquer Lake District test

31 July 2023 (by D.Cartwright)

Sheila McNulty won her age group for the second year in a row as two Radcliffe Athletic Club runners had fantastic runs at the challenging Lakeland 50 ultra race.

McNulty was first VW70 in 18hrs 9mins and the oldest runner at the popular Lake District event which is billed as one of the greatest ultra trail challenges in Europe.

Kath Davies also had a storming run, beating her time from last year and finishing 3rd in the competitive VW60 age group in 14hrs 20mins.

The weather was very challenging, with strong winds and heavy rain throughout the tough 50-mile route which has 10,000 feet of climbing.

Some 1,700 runners took on the challenge which started at the Dalemain Estate at the northern end of Ullswater before taking in Kentmere, Ambleside and the Langdales, and finishing with a climb to Coniston.

Each year the organisers choose a theme and this year it had a Western flavour with cowboy style buckles instead of medals.

Four members contended with rain and very boggy conditions underfoot at the Lee Mill Fell Race in Bacup, the first in a series of four midweek fell races organised by Rossendale Harriers.

Ian Swan was 33rd, covering 6.6 miles and 1,089 feet of climbing in 1:08:42, while Donna Cartwright claimed second VW45 in 1:11:04. Karen Doherty ran 1:37:15 and Stephen Crowe finished his first fell race in 1:41:46.

Tracy Wroe completed her challenge to run/walk 1,000 miles which she started in January.

Members were once again out in force at a variety of Saturday morning 5k parkruns. Mark Garner was 17th and first VM50 at Burnage in 21:57, while Mia Derbyshire was the second woman and 14th overall after clocking 26:57 at Chadderton Hall.

Results from elsewhere: Bolton – Ken Smith (26:43), Natalie Hitchen (37:00) and Vince Ashton (62:18); Fulham Palace – Rob Shiels (20:16); Glossop – Stephen Crowe (29:13); Heaton Park – Mark Taylor (23:21), Katherine Biddle (31:10); Minehead – Elaine Bailey (first VW60 28:58); Peel – Ethan Malone (24:21), Chemane Golding (25:18), Charlotte Holden (27:26); Roberts Park – Helen Kay (30:31), Bev Quinton (38:52); Stretford – Bradleigh Holmes (20:51); Worsley Woods – Alison Howard (27:26) and Tracy Wroe (31:08).
