Age group wins as Radcliffe dozen complete tough half marathon

2 July 2023 (by D.Cartwright)

A dozen Radcliffe runners competed in a gruelling half marathon in Cheshire.

They posted great performances – including two age group wins – at Sunday’s Lyme Half Marathon, part of the club’s road and trail championship.

John Gibbs was a superb eighth and second MV40, clocking 1:49:07 on the hilly course which starts at Lyme Park and has around 1,760ft of climbing.

He was followed by Gary Adkins, who was 13th and third in the same age group, in 1:54:55 while Ian Swan was 25th in 2:03:48.

Mia Derbyshire was the seventh woman in 2:09:37, two places ahead of Annette McQueen who ran 2:10:30. Next to cross the line were Marc Taylor (2:11:38), Simon Foulkes (2:12:56) and Warren Simmens (2:24:10).

Kath Davies was first FV60 in 2:38:47, Karen Doherty ran 2:39:19, Kath Biddle clocked 2:59:21 and Sheila McNulty was first FV70 in 3:32:56.

In-form Davies picked up another age group win at the midweek Eddie’s Revenge Fell Race in Shaw. She was one of five RAC runners who took part in both races.

The 3.8-mile course with 1,080ft of ascent is part of the club’s fell championship and the Run the Moors Fell Grand Prix, which is contested by local clubs.

There was another great performance from Gibbs who was a superb 16th, and second MV40, in 30. Ian Swan ran 33:50 to finish 30th and Donna Cartwright was the fifth woman, and first FV45, in 35:23.

Mark Garner ran 36:57, Mia Derbyshire was the first senior woman in 37:14 and Kath Davies ran 42:53. They were followed by Karen Doherty (43:17) and Peter Warr (52:46).

Five members took part in the popular Bolton Night Run, part of the Ironman UK weekend, which had two distance options. Mark Taylor was 20th and third MV45 in the 10k event, clocking 44:28. In the 5k event, Helen Kay ran 30:11, Natalie Hitchen 32:43, Andy Wheeler was second MV65 in 35:17 and Bev Quinton clocked 39:07.

Adam Wills ran 44:53 at the midweek Run Through Media City 10k. Meanwhile the age group wins continued at a very windy Blackpool 10k where Emma Wolstencroft was first FV45 in 1:04:49, a second ahead of Louise Shield who was first FV40.

Hot coals, electric shocks, a giant inflatable slide and climbing walls were just some of the 25 obstacles faced by Mark Garner at the muddy Total Warrior event in Leeds. Despite the mud, he completed the 12k course in 1:15:56.

Radcliffe was also well represented at the Saturday morning 5k parkruns.

Taking part in the 555th Bolton parkrun were Chemane Golding (27:17), Mark Williams (31:13), Elaine Bailey (31:24) and Andy Wheeler (42:16).

Three took on the hilly Watergrove parkrun with Helen Kay running 34:58, Jackie Faith 36:25 and Bev Quinton 48:46.

Mia Derbyshire was the first woman home in 25:40 at Chadderton Hall, and results from other locations were: Alexandra – Rob Shiels (20:01); Bushy Park – Stephen Crowe (27:11); Old Railway Trail, Llangollen – Peter Hunter (24:58); Peel – Tracy Wroe (29:57); Penrhyn – Katherine Biddle (27:31); Philips Park – Lucy Tetler (32:42); South Manchester – Sheila Jones (24:14); Stretford – Bradleigh Holmes (21:57).
