Sizzling temperatures and stunning scenery for RAC members25 June 2023 (by D.Cartwright) |
A challenging 10-mile race lived up to its name for Radcliffe Athletic Club member Katherine Biddle.
She described Sunday’s The Midsummer Murder as “brutal” after completing the hilly route in 2:18:38 in hot and humid conditions.
The multi-terrain course in Buckinghamshire starts and finishes in Hambleden village. As well as stunning views of the Chiltern Hills, it goes through Turville, where the TV comedy ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ was filmed, and also passes the windmill which featured in the film 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'.
Natalie Hitchen also had lovely scenery – minus the hills – when she travelled to the seaside for the popular Southport 10k on Sunday. She clocked 1:09:12 on the flat course which has a long seafront stretch.
Meanwhile, the stunning settings continued for Bev Quinton who ran the Etna parkrun while on holiday in Italy. The hilly route includes running round the ring of the extinct Monti Rossi volcano next to Mount Etna.
She described the 34C temperature as “overbearing”, with the pine forest providing little shade, after finishing 22nd in 47:36.
Other members completed Saturday morning parkruns closer to home, including Katherine Biddle who prepared for her 10-mile race by running 27:54 at University Parks on Oxford.
The largest club turnout was at Heaton Park where John Gibbs was 22nd in 19:31 followed by Mark Taylor (21:10), Charlene Leyden (23:55), Chemane Golding (25:41), Mia Derbyshire (27:07), Elaine Bailey (29:00) and Lucy Tetler (33:09).
Speedy Sheila Jones claimed the fastest age-graded position when she was first VW65 in 24:30 at Heslington parkrun. Results from elsewhere: Bath Skyline – Helen Kay (30:07); Bolton – Karen Doherty (29:04); Fountains Abbey – Peter Hunter (23:34); Huddersfield – Stephen Crowe (27:27); Peel – Tracy Wroe (30:47).
