Guard of honour for returning Radcliffe runner

14 May 2023 (by D.Cartwright)

Radcliffe AC’s Mike Scott received a guard of honour from clubmates as he finished his second race, and his longest, after recovering from a heart attack.

The club had a fantastic turnout of 34 runners at the four-mile Haigh Hall Race, with age group wins for Iain Harris (MV70) and Sheila McNulty (FV75)..

It was the fourth race in the Central Lancashire Grand Prix, which is contested by local clubs, and also part of RAC’s road and trail championship.

John Gibbs led home the sea of yellow and black vests, finishing 19th in 24:39. Behind him, there were great performances all round as people clocked PBs or great times returning from injury and illness.

Rob Shiels was the club’s next finisher, running 25:52 on the two-lap course on the trails, paths and roads around the historic hall. He was followed by Craig Norman who clocked 26:28 and Ian Swan in 27:21.

Other results: Simon Foulkes (27:43), Mike Kontowtt (27:50), Mark Taylor (27:54), Steven Fawcett (28:19), Adam Wills (28:45), Donna Cartwright (second FV45 29:32) Mia Derbyshire (third FS 29:53), Mark Garner (30:05), Charlene Leyden (30:56), Paula Abernethy (third F55 31:48), Sheila Jones (second F66 32:25), David Bartlett (33:00), Chemane Golding (33:20), Kath Davies (34:40), Karen Doherty (35:09), Alison Howarth (35:20), Emma Wolstencroft (37:12), Elaine Bailey (37:16), Louise Shield (37:35), Sarah Tucker (38:29), Helen Kay (39:41), Tracy Wroe (39:53), Peter Warr (41:12), Lucy Tetler (43:47), Natalie Hitchen (44:18), Sheila McNulty (45:23), Andy Wheeler (47:08), Bev Quinton (50:02), Iain Harris (50:48) and Mike Scott (53:17).

Both the men’s and women’s A teams finished fifth.

Gary Adkins was a fantastic 79th in 3:06:26 at the hot and hilly Rob Burrows Leeds Marathon. Two members were in action at the Leeds Half Marathon: Si Foulkes ran 1:33:54 while Gail Champion clocked 2:13:55, knocking more than eight minutes off her time from last year’s Great North Run.

Paul Benson completed the Eyam Half Marathon on 2:00:19 while Alison Howarth described the Happy Valley Trail Half Marathon in Bollington, Cheshire as the “hardest race she had ever done”. She was third FV50, completing the course which has 1,360ft of climbing in 2:54:50.

Also in Cheshire, Elaine Bailey was second FV60 after clocking 28:18 at the Middlewich 5km.

The improving Andy Wheeler marked two years since he suffered a heart attack by running 34:11 at Heaton parkrun, knocking two minutes off his time from a fortnight ago. He was joined by Mark Taylor (21:45), Sheila Jones (first FV65 24:42) and Ethan Malone (25:00).
