Crowning moments for Radcliffe runners

Club championship points were up for grabs on the hills for Radcliffe AC members.

John Gibbs led home the RAC contingent at the midweek Coiners Fell Race, part of the club’s fell championship and also the Run The Moors Fell Grand Prix which is contested by eight local clubs.

He was a fantastic 19th, clocking 56:20 on the seven-mile course with approximately 1,000ft of climbing.

The varied route on the paths, tracks and moorland above Mytholmroyd took in Stoodley Pike. The club’s next finisher was Craig Norman in 58:57 while Ian Swan ran 1:04:12. Donna Cartwright was second W40 in 1:07:26, Mark Garner knocked a fantastic seven minutes off his previous course best, clocking 1:10:47, and Karen Doherty ran 1:28:21.

Members took part in a variety of other races over the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend.

Paul Benson was crowned second MV50 when he was 26th overall in 1:45:26 at the Coronation Half Marathon in Morecombe, while Mike Kontowtt ran 42.31 to claim third MV60 at Alderley Edge Bypass10k.

Mia Derbyshire was the 13th  woman in 1:43:54 over 10.3 miles at the hilly Bluebell Trail Race in Halifax. The day before she was seventh woman at Philips Park parkrun in 24:35

Meanwhile, Lee Cooper and Paula Abernethy completed the challenging Horwich Triathlon. One of the oldest triathlons in the North West, the race consists of a 500m pool swim, a 40k undulating cycle ride and an 8.6k run to the summit of Rivington Pike and back.

Cooper finished in 2:41:10 ahead of Abernethy in 3:04:09 who said it was the toughest triathlon she had completed.

Earlier in the week, David Bartlett clocked 31:27 at 5k Astley Park Trail Race, the first in a series of three races in the grounds of Astley Hall in Chorley.

Members were also in action at a variety of parkruns, with the biggest contingent at Heaton Park where Rob Shiels was 27th in 19:35 followed by Marc Taylor (21:21), Mark Taylor (21:25), Ian Swan (21:41), Ethan Malone (24:53), Charlotte Holden (26:11) and Elaine Bailey (27:40).

Sheila Jones was first VW65 in 25:33 at Rothay Park in Ambleside and also achieved the highest age graded time.

Mark Gardner was 26th in 23:19 at Bolton Parkrun while David Schofield ran 34:25. Results from other locations were: Erddig - Katherine Biddle (27:55); Peel – Lucy Tetler – (33:05); Sale Water – Bev Quinton (40:00); St Helen’s – Peter Hunter (24:00); Stamford Park – Martin Archer (25:16); Wilmslow – Stephen Crowe (29:41); Worsley Woods – Tracy Wroe (30:36).
