Higher, further, faster for RAC athletes

Peter Hunter bit off more than the usual distance when he completed the Great British Seaside Marathon.

Running along the Lincolnshire coast, the out-and-back course from Skegness to Sutton on Sea is actually 27.3 miles.

Radcliffe AC’s Hunter was 19th in 4:18:37 – saying that he now hated sand more than hills! Runners also received an official marathon time, with Hunter clocking 4:03:11.

A trio of club members were in action at the flat and fast Wilmslow Half Marathon. Gary Adkins ran 1:21:57, knocking 55 seconds off his personal best. Mia Derbyshire was the club’s next finisher in 1:38:06 and Richard Bellis completed the line-up in 2:17:58.

Paul Benson was also in action over 13.1 miles, clocking 1:46:00 at Sheffield Half Marathon.

Despite describing it as the hardest race he had ever done, Craig Norman completed the Heptonstall Fell Race in 2:52:00. The tough 15-mile course in West Yorkshire has 3,337ft of ascent.

Emma Wolstencroft was vertically challenged when she conquered the World’s Steepest Street Run.

The 6k event in Harlech, North Wales starts with a climb up Ffordd Pen Llech, which has a maximum gradient of 37.45 degrees. The course continues to climb steeply for almost 2k, then runners are rewarded with glorious views before descending back into the mediaeval town.

Wolstencroft was the 24th woman in 41:10, completing the initial lung-busting climb in 4:17.

The popular Heaton parkrun was cancelled due to another event, but RAC members were in action at a variety of other locations on Saturday morning.

Rob Shiels was an impressive second, and first VM45, in 20:18 at Bolton parkrun. Also running were Paul Benson (26:41) and Steven Lomax (28:56).

Results from elsewhere: Alexandra Park – Vince Ashton (58:32 walking); Chadderton Hall - Elaine Bailey (31:31); Fletcher Moss – Stephen Crowe (27:44); Peel – Mark Taylor (22:02), Ethan Malone (24:43), Charlotte Holden (26:15); Philips Park – Katherine Biddle (27:34), Helen Kay (30:43); Temple Newsam – Bev Quinton (40:48); Worsley Woods – Tracy Wroe (32:11).
