Tough and tumble in Yorkshire29 January 2023 (by D.Cartwright) |
There were thrills and spills for Radcliffe Athletic Club members when they travelled to West Yorkshire for a popular long-distance event.
Five club representatives took part in The Hebden, organised by the Long Distance Walkers Association. Billed as a challenge rather than a race, entrants could either walk or run a 15-mile or 22-mile loop on the hills around Hebden Bridge.
Starting and finishing in Mytholmroyd, Ian Swan flew round the longer route with approximately 4,700 feet of climbing in a great 4:35:29.
There was an equally impressive performance by Kath Davies who broke her wrist, injured her ribs and badly bruised her leg when she fell around 13 miles into the shorter route. However, she didn’t let that stop her and showed true grit to bravely carry on and finish in 3:59:49.
Also running the 15-mile route, which has around 3,200ft of ascent, was club chairwoman Donna Cartwright who clocked 3:12:45. Julie Robertson chalked up a time of 3:29:02 returning from injury and Karen Doherty, who ran with Kath, finished in 3:59:51 in her first event of this kind.
Over on the Lancashire coast, Mark Williams was first MV55 in 1:11:45 at a windy St Annes 10 Mile race while Natalie Hitchen ran 1:51:43. Meanwhile, Lucy Tetler clocked 01:01:17 at the Stockport Daffodil 10k, knocking a few seconds off her last 10k time from December.
Radcliffe runners were out in force at the popular 5k parkrun events. At Heaton Park, James Higginson was 16th in 19:14 ahead of Rob Shiels (19:22), Brandon Wilkinson (21:08), junior Robbie Parkinson (23:34), Emma Wolstencroft (29:05), Helen Kay (30:21), Mark Taylor (41:12), Bev Quinton (41:51) and Michael Scott (41:53).
Results from elsewhere: Bolton - Elaine Bailey (31:26) and Natalie Hitchen (volunteer 65:52); Morecambe Prom – Stephen Crowe (26:57); Preston – Rob Lister (21:41); Stretford - Peter Hunter (22:13); Worsley Woods – Tracy Wroe (32:30).
