Rain didn't dampen the spirits of RAC runners

8 January 2023 (by D.Cartwright)

Bad weather didn’t “rain” on the parade for Radcliffe Athletic Club members who notched up great results despite the poor conditions.

Rob Shiels posted a speedy 40:25 in atrocious conditions at Tatton 10k, finishing a superb 19th out of 566 runners and third V45.

There was a new personal best of 1:44:15 for Adam Wills at the picturesque Central Lancashire New Year Half Marathon - an achievement that was even more impressive given the wet and windy weather.

Simon Foulkes enjoyed stunning Cumbrian scenery when he also in action over 13.1 miles. He completed the North Lakes New Year Half Marathon in 1:39:08 in freezing conditions.

Meanwhile Alison Howarth and Lucy Tetler faced muddy and slippery conditions at the Hit the Trail five-mile race in Reddish Vale, Stockport. They ran 49:37 and 51:01 respectively.

Lots of rain was also the order of the day for RAC members who took part in the popular Saturday morning 5k parkruns.

The largest turnout was at Heaton Park where Sheila Jones ran the fastest age graded time – when times are weighted to take account of age – with an impressive 24:00. She was also first VW65 and the ninth woman overall.

Also running were: Brandon Wilkinson (22:45), Mark Taylor (22:59), junior Robbie Parkinson (24:14), Deborah Warrington (35:43) and Emma Wolstencroft (35:44).

John Gibbs was ninth at Worsley Woods in 19:11 followed by Ian Swan who was 21st in 21:16. Also running were Simon Foulkes (21:30) and Tracy Wroe (33:52)

Elaine Bailey was first VW60 at Bolton Parkrun in 33:08 while, at Woodbank, Chris Paxton was sixth in 21:56 and Peter Hunter was 21st in 23:50.

Results from elsewhere: Ellesmere Port – Stephen Crowe (33:01); Glossop – Bev Quinton (42:23); Hyndburn – Cheryl Gallagher (39:13).
