Mike celebrates return to running after heart surgery

Mike Scott celebrated Christmas Eve by completing his first parkrun since having heart surgery in April.

Radcliffe Athletic Club teammates turned out in force to help Mike toast his achievement at Heaton Park.

Mike, who had a heart attack in August 2021, returned to running after completing 18 weeks of cardio rehabilitation. He also did a nine-week ‘couch to 5k’ programme, supported by clubmate Bev Quinton.

He said: “Many, many thanks to everyone who came to Heaton Park parkrun to support my return to running. Also, a big thanks to everyone who has encouraged me on my rehab.

“It was a great morning and I'm back in the big, wide running world.”

Mike clocked 44:01 in the run, and also running were: Rob Shiels (20:40), Sheila Jones (who was first VW65 in 24:42), Kath Davies (28:05), Stephen Crowe (29:52), Helen Kay (30:25), Elaine Bailey (31:39), Lucy Tetler (34:19), Bev Quinton (44:02), Tracy Wroe (44:03), Sheila McNulty (44:03) and Iain Harris (44:04).

Also running parkruns on Christmas Eve were: Bolton – Mark Williams (33:52); Lytham Hall - Adam Willis (25:12); Mullingar – Simon Foulkes (20:58); and Watergrove – Cheryl Gallagher (39:19).

Radcliffe runners were also out in force at Christmas Day parkruns. Kathryn Davies ran 28:42 at Bolton followed by Stephen Crowe (31:58), Elaine Bailey (32:03) and Natalie Hitchen (35:59).

Sheila Jones topped her age group again, clocking 25:14 at Ford parkrun in Ulverston and Peter Hunter was 16th at Hyndburn in 25:57. Other results were Heaton Park - Cheryl Gallagher (38:19); Witton - Helen Kay (33:51); Worsley Woods - Tracy Wroe (1:01:47 volunteer tail walker).
