Viva Espana for Radcliffe marathon duo

4 December 2022 (by D.Cartwright)

Two Radcliffe Athletic Club members clocked great marathon times in the Spanish sun.

Simon Foulkes and Mia Derbyshire both ran under three hours and thirty minutes in the Valencia Marathon.

Foulkes notched up a personal best of 3:24:25, knocking a minute off his previous mark.

Derbyshire was pleased with her time of 3:26:21 in her fourth marathon this year, having previously run in Manchester, Edinburgh and Amsterdam. She showed her consistency by running sub 3:30 in each race – despite struggling with her hip and back since Amsterdam.

Radcliffe teammates enjoyed more traditional winter running weather when they took on the infamous mud at Marl Pits cross country. Conditions were cold, dry and bright for the fourth and final fixture of the Red Rose Cross Country League which is contested by local clubs.

Kath Davies was the club’s first finisher in the 5k women’s race, crossing the finish line in 32:37. She was followed by Karen Doherty (33:17), Louise Shield (36:20) and Elaine Bailey (36:35). The women’s team was seventh.

Men over 60 can also run with the women and Andy Wheeler clocked 47:21.

Craig Norman was the club’s sole representative in the men’s 10k race, clocking 39:48.

Runners had to complete at least three races to count in the final league standings: Bailey was fifth WV60, Norman was sixth MV40, Davies was seventh VW55 and Doherty was 11th in the VW45 category. The women’s team was ninth overall.

Alex Pullan was first in his 600 metres heat in 1:45 at the Lee Valley Open Meeting in North London. Meanwhile, Rob Shiels clocked a speedy 39:44 to come 50th out of 892 runners on the road at Sunday’s Blackburn 10k. A day earlier he ran 22:25 at the 5k parkrun in Heaton Park. Joining him at Heaton Park were: junior Robbie Parkinson (23:44), Sheila Jones (first VW65 24:41) and Helen Kay (40:49).

Results from other parkruns were: Bolton – Ken Smith (25:29); Burnage – Bev Quinton (37:34); Burnley – Cheryl Gallagher (34:54); East Park – Stephen Crowe (29:03); Worsley Woods – Tracy Wroe (30:57).
