Great turnout by Radcliffe runners at Bury

21 November 2022 (by D.Cartwright)

Radcliffe Athletic Club members were out in force at the Bury Festival of Running.

Some 20 runners took part in the 10k, the fun run and the new 10-mile race that began and ended on The Rock.

They joined hundreds of runners in this annual event, which is part of the Jane Tomlinson Run for All initiative.

First home for the club in the 10-mile race was Ian Swan, who was 45th overall in 1:15:14. Helen Andrew was third F50 in 1:19:09, and also running were Lee Turner (1:23:16), Ken Smith (1:26:27), Stephen O’Hagan (1:27:38), Kath Davies (1:30:29), Helen Morley (1:32:30), Chris Allen,(1:39:00), Tracy Wroe (1:51:02) and Helen Kay (1:52:19).

Sheila Jones clocked 48:34 to take first F60 in 10k, and the other results were: Mark Williams (44:03), Mia Derbyshire (45:05), Robbie Parkinson (51:34), Wayne Jennings (53:35), Elaine Bailey (59:17), Peter Warr (1:04:43), Lucy Tetler (1:03:48) and Natalie Hitchen (1:07:38).

Junior Oliver Swan took part in the fun run, while Bev Quinton and Debi Warrington volunteered as marshals at the festival.

Craig Norman took on an ultra event with a difference; Escape for Meriden, which started at midnight.

Participants started at the ancient stone cross in the centre of England near Solihull and had 24 hours to travel as far as they could “as the crow flies” in any direction on foot.

Norman managed to cover 65-miles, making it to Kidsgrove near Stoke-on Trent, which qualified him for a silver medal.

He said: “That was one of my hardest ultra runs I’ve ever done. I've never had to push my body like I did.

“I chose to run along canals and it was like running a cross country course for 40 miles. I had a mental battle with injuries and sickness from eight miles in, and it never got easier,

“I still achieved a new personal best of 65 miles and I’m super happy with my performance, now I've had time to reflect. I'll be back in a few years to do it again.”

From A-Y, members competed in a range of Saturday morning parkruns. Results were: Alderley Park – Stephen Crowe (32:25); Alexandra – Sheila Jones (ninth woman in 23:12); Bolton – Kathryn Davies (43:04); Brighouse – Bev Quinton (38:12); Monsall Trail – Elaine Bailey (29:34); Preston – Helen Kay (30:52); Stretford – Rob Shiels (19:43); Wilmslow – Chris Paxton (11th in 19:53)  and Peter Hunter (22:43); Worsley Woods - Tracy Wroe (31:14); York – Cheryl Gallagher (35:13).
