Radcliffe Athletic Club runners kicked off the South East Lancashire Cross Country League with a series of fine performances.

Conditions were perfect for the fixture, the first of four races which are being held in Heaton Park and are contested by local clubs.

The club’s juniors kicked off the action with Aoife Warr running 11:22 in the under-11s girls’ race which was approximately 2k, while Carraghen Spence clocked 16:42 in the 3k under-13s girls’ race.

Duncan Whalley posted 18:01 in the under-15s boys’ race which was 4.5k, Niamh Warr ran 25:42 over the same distance in the corresponding girls’ race and Robbie Parkinson completed the 6k under-17s boy’s race in 33:34.

The senior ladies raced over approximately 8k, with Kath Davies the club’s first finisher in 41:19. She was followed by Karen Doherty (41:47), Louise Shield (44:43) and Alison Howarth (44:57).

John Gibbs was a fantastic 22nd out of 175 runners in the 10k men’s race, clocking 38:47. Also running were Craig Norman (40:15), Rob Shiels (43:16 in his first cross country race for several years), Simon Foulkes (47:18), Neil Greenhalgh (49:36) and David Bartlett (55:34).

The men’s team was 10th and the ladies’ team was 14th.

It was Rob Sheils’ second run of the day in Heaton Park; he warmed up for cross country by clocking 22.45 in the Saturday morning parkrun there. He was joined by Elaine Bailey who ran 28:44.

Peter Hunter was a great ninth in 23:44 at Centre Vale parkrun. Results from elsewhere were: Marple – Cheryl Gallagher (36:25); Peel – Iain Harris (39:12), Bev Quinton (39:20) and Vince Ashton (73:02 volunteer tail walker); Worsley Woods – Tracy Wroe (31:50).
