Mountain of a challenge for Lee Cooper

12 September 2022 (by D.Cartwright)

Lee Cooper took on a mountain of a challenge when he conquered a 22-mile race with a difference!

The Radcliffe Athletic Club member completed Man v Mountain Snowdon, an adventure run which starts at sea level in Caernarfon Castle and weaves its way to the summit of Snowdon.

Competitors then take on challenging obstacles on the descent down the other side - including jumping into a quarry, canoeing and a water slide. Cooper completed the course in a fantastic 5 hours 57 minutes.

Kathryn Davies and Sheila McNulty also took on a long distance challenge, running the 55th Rossendale Annual Round The Hills Walk in 4:51:49. Organised by Rossendale Rotary Club, the 18-mile route for walkers and runners started and finished at Marl Pits in Rawtenstall and had 2,877 ft of climbing on the local fells.

Club chairwoman Donna Cartwright continued her great form when she was the fifth woman, and second VW40, in 53:29 at the Lakeland Trails Keswick 10km race. She had to contend with slippery, rocky descents on the tough course which has 1,000ft of climbing.

Radcliffe members proved that they “do like to be beside the seaside” when they travelled to the coast for events.

Sheila Jones and Caroline Malone completed the Southport Seaside 10k, with Jones finishing first VW65 in 49:32 while Malone ran 58:29.

Just up the coast Cheryl Gee, Bev Quinton and Debi Warrington had a unique view of the world-famous illuminations at Blackpool Night Run, a 7.5k fun run along the promenade.

RAC members were out in force at a variety of parkruns. Alex Pullan was third at Bolton Parkrun in 21:12. Also running were Ian Swan who was tenth in 22:53 and Kathryn Davies clocked 28:22.

At Heaton Park, junior Robbie Parkinson ran 23:02, Sheila Jones was first VW65 in 23:21 and Emma Wolstencroft bagged a new parkrun pb of 27:22. Also running were Nick Barnes (28:20), Charles Whalley (45:59) and Helen Sandiford (47:00).

Results from elsewhere: Bushy, Dublin – Mia Derbyshire (23:00); Huddersfield – Peter Hunter (21:54); Peel – Helen Kay (27:30) and Caroline Malone (29:47); Riverside – Stephen Crowe (27:34); Tyne Green – Paula Abernethy (first VW55 24:03); Worsley Woods – Tracy Wroe (33:49); Wythenshawe – Cheryl Gallagher (34:48).
