RAC race is a huge success17 September 2023 (by D.Cartwright) |
Radcliffe Athletic Club had a fantastic turnout of 147 runners at its 5k multi-terrain race on Saturday morning.
Conditions were perfect for the event which started near Sedgley Park Rugby Club in Prestwich.
Runners crossed the motorway bridge to complete a loop on the paths and trails in Philips Park. They then contended with the sting in the tail – a challenging climb up the locally-known ‘Heartbreak Hill’ – before finishing at the rugby club.
The event was part of the Central Lancashire Grand Prix, a series of ten races organised and contested by local clubs. It is the second time that Radcliffe has used the route for its popular 5k fixture.
Bolton United Harrier Anthony Valentine stormed to victory in 17:49. He was well clear of his team-mate William Tomlinson who clinched a dramatic second place in 18:12, just a second ahead of Charlie Weaver from Vale Royal AC.
Hannah Lucas from Bury AC smashed the woman’s course record and was a fantastic seventh overall in 19:26. Team-mate Rachel Marshall was the second woman in 21:15 while Josephine Maley-Jones from Astley & Tyldesley clocked 21:56 in third..
RAC members, including the club’s juniors, made sure the race went smoothly by volunteering at the event as marshals and in other roles.
However, three members ran, with Craig Norman clocking 20:59 followed by Adam Wills in 22:25. Elaine Bailey volunteered as the tail runner, finishing in 43:37.
The prizegiving was held in the clubhouse and a raffle and tombola raised £250 for MY Wellness, a local charity which supports families who have lost a child to suicide.
Meanwhile, RAC member Kath Biddle travelled to Scotland for Sunday's Dalkeith Half Marathon, held on the trails at a country park outside Edinburgh. She finished in 2:21:00, a day after clocking 27:10 at the 5k Victoria parkrun in Glasgow.
